Biography: John Krasinski

by Cicely Richard

Created on: July 25, 2008

John Krasinski makes the nerdy, sarcastic guys look cool and sexy on the hit NBC sitcom "The Office." As the hardworking sales representative Jim Halpert, he and the rest of his workmates put up with their inept, clueless boss, Michael Scott, played by Steve Carell. Everyone fell in love with him when he was pining for receptionist, Pam, and applauded for him when he finally got the girl of his dreams. On this past season's finale, we waited in anticipation for his to propose to Pam, only to have his plan thwarted and will probably continue to watch until he finds the success and happiness he deserves.

Krasinski was born on October 20, 1979, in Newton, Massachusetts, the youngest of three boys in a medical family. His father was a doctor and his mother was a nurse. With such a strong family background in the medical field, you would think he would follow in his parents' footsteps. Instead, he caught the acting bug at an early age.

As a youngster, Krasinski had an insatiable appetite for reading and acting. Ironically, his first foray into acting was a high school play written by B. J. Novak, a writer and his co-star on "The Office." In addition to acting, the tall, slender actor played Little League Baseball. However, it would be acting not athletics that would bring him success as an adult.

According to his biography on the IMDB website, he attended Brown University after graduating from Newton South High School in 1997. At the university, he studied English and graduated in 2002 with honors in playwriting and a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature. Once he earned his college degree, he studied at the Eugene O'Neill National Theatre Institute for one semester.

Writing would serve Krasinski well early in his career. In 2002, he was a script intern on the Late Night show with Conan O'Brian. His big screen debut happened that same year, and for many years, he played a number of small roles in movies, even a part as a writer in the movie "Dreamgirls." He hasn't, however, had a lot of box-office success in movies where he has had major roles, such as the comedy flop "License to Wed" with Robin Williams and Mandy Moore and "Leatherheads" with George Clooney. Nevertheless, his role on "The Office" has brought him both critical and audience praise.

Even if he doesn't become the next leading man, John Krasinski has a lot more to offer than just appearing in front of the screen. As a multi-talented person, he will be able to have a long, diverse career as an actor, writer, and possibly a director. For anyone working in the fickle world of Hollywood where they are always looking for a new face, these abilities will solidify his presence in the entertainment industry.
