Well, I am not.
A lot have already been discussed still I want to share my views on it.
As a responsible Indian I do not support India- U.S nuclear deal.
This nuclear deal certainly carries significant benefits for both India and U.S.A. Some remarkable benefits are :
1.) The major benefit that India will get is energy security. By importing Uranium and other materials that are required to run nuclear power projects, India can increase energy production. U.S is also ready to provide nuclear fuel and a team of experts to promote the nuclear energy programmes in India.
2.) This deal will strengthen the relationship between India and U.S. That will definitely accelerate economic growth in both countries through greater trade, investment, education, and technology collaboration.
3.)On the other side, U.S will also benefitted by this deal. U.S companies will get the plenty of opportunities to work in India and that will be a tremendous financial gain for U.S economy. It is estimated that U.S companies can get at least dollar 50 billion in the long run.
But there are some serious risks, which makes me stand on the other side of the deal. Means no deal is good for India. The risks are as follows:
1.) India has to open its civilian nuclear reactors to international inspectors in exchange of nuclear fuel and expertise. It is also argued that it inhibits India's ability to conduct nuclear tests. Is it really justified to exposes India's nuclear weapons programme to external interference as world knows India has serious security threats from the neighbouring countries. No deal and politics can play with the security of the nation.
2.) This deal will restrict India's ability to produce fissile material for military purposes. India should not forget that her neighboring countries Pakistan and China both are nuclear powers and with whom India has territorial disputes. When these kinds of constraints are not restricting them then how could they restrict India. No matter, whatever the case may be but country's security shall remain on top. Energy production can be replaced by other means but not with country's security.
3.)This deal will definitely solve the energy problems. But same time we should not forget about the cost factor. India has to set some new Nuclear plants for power production that needs a lot of capital cost as well as running cost will be very high.
4.) The next concern is about radioactive nuclear waste disposal. This could be a very serious threat for future generations. We can not overlook the problem of global warming and water pollution of seas because of these unsolvable waste disposal.
5.) Although this deal talks about the separation of India's civilian and military reactors in a phased manner. Is it really as simple as the deal commits. I remember the 1998 nuclear tests when anti-nuclear movement publicly demanded for the separation of two. But it was not taken seriously at that time. This point has many serious questions like who will lead the military reactor and civil reactor, how they will co op with each other. Can they work independently or need some dependence for technology etc. and if they do not work independently then how the international interference will affect the military reactors.
It seems that Indian government just want to fulfill his commitment with U.S government at any cost.
But this is a very serious issue which needs an in-depth analysis and should not be decided in hurry.
