Everyone needs a quick pick me up from time to time. With all of the stress and responsibilities in our lives, each one of us has felt like we've hit rock bottom. Every encounter in our day is yet another log on the fire, until we are about ready to explode. It is best to resolve these stressors as soon as possible, for our mental and physical health. Here are some quick boosts to improve our mood and get some relief from daily stress.
Breathing deeply is nature's built-in mood booster. Taking a few deep, relaxing breaths can give you a moment's relief from whatever life has thrown your way. The time, however brief, can give you a bit of perspective on a potentially stressful situation. Lighting a soothing aromatherapy candle, and breathing deeply can give you added benefits, as calming smells can brighten your mood, improve mental clarity, and trigger pleasant memories.
Count your blessings. Whether your blessings are God-given or simple happenstance of the universe, going over all the joys life has given you will improve your mood. Putting the current situation in perspective can bring joy and relief when a situation is too demanding. Know that you have lived to survive another day, and that this, too, shall pass.
Help someone else. When you are feeling low, cheering someone else up by using your talents and abilities will often energize you and make you feel better about yourself. Seeing their grateful smiles can cast your cares aside, and you can feel proud that you've made someone's day. Also, perhaps next time you are in need, your friend may return the favor.
Drink some water. Often when we're feeling sluggish, our body is trying to signal that it is thirsty. A cup or two of water will leave you refreshed and ready to take on life's challenges. When your thirst is quenched, you will be ready to take on the world.
Grab a snack. Hand in hand with thirst, hunger is an important player in maintaining your energy. Lack of proper nutrition will leave you groggy and irritable. A light snack will boost your mood. A word of caution: don't let a quick bite turn into overeating, or eating unhealthy things. Poor snack choices can leave you worse off than you started. Some fresh fruit or a light sandwich will improve your focus and concentration greatly, when you're not focused on your growling stomach.
Go for a walk. Whether it's down the hallway at your workplace, or around the block, a quick stroll releases tension and gives you a quick burst of energy. It also gives you a little time to process your current situation. If you find walking boring, grab a friend to chat with along the way, or grab your bicycle instead. Any exercise will greatly increase your energy, and relieve any tensions in your body and mind.
Carve out some fun time. Either alone or with a friend, taking some time to do something you truly enjoy can boost your spirits. Even if you can't do it right now, schedule the event, and really visualize yourself having fun. When you have something to look forward to, your current challenges seem much smaller.
Take a spiritual time out. Whether by meditation, prayer, or simple contemplation of life's mysteries, getting a spiritual boost will often shed light on what's troubling you. Taking a few moments throughout the day, combined with longer sessions in the morning or evening will help keep your mind nimble. After communing with the divine, you can feel confident throughout your day
