Does god have a penis? Not likely. He doesn't have a need for one.

This largely pointless argument comes from the "common" knowledge that we are made in God's image. So we look in a mirror and decide that God must look something like us.

That is coming at the issue from the wrong end of the question. The correct way is to go back to the beginning. Since this is a discussion about God then we need to go back to god's word; what does He say about Himself?

The bible records God's word for Man and God's Will for mankind. He describes Himself in many indirect ways. Observers record descriptions of Him as a burning bush, a pillar of flame, a column of smoke. He never appears even to Moses as a full humanoid.

Part of the reason for this is that God wanted us to see Him in Jesus; He didn't want us focusing on Him alone.

But, what about this "in His image" stuff? Genesis 1:26 (NKJV) "Let Us make man in Our image, according to our likeness . . . " The rest of the verse talks about the job God meant for us to do on Earth.

In verse 27 the bible goes on to say, So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created Him; male and female He created them.

Seems convoluted, doesn't it. The reason the Bible restates certain points is to be certain and to eliminate confusion. "He did it, this he did and it was done by him"; these kinds of phrases avoid translation errors. It covers all the various subject-verb relationships.

God is complete, perfect and without needs. Man is broken, flawed and incomplete. We are also mortal. We were designed to need others from the beginning; And the Lord God said, "It is not good that man should be alone; I will make a helper comparable to him." (Gen 2:18 NKJV)

Thus we have sex organs. We need them to bond physically with our mates and to reproduce.

The New Testament addresses man becoming more like God. According to Galatians we come closer God's image when we become Christians.

Galatians 3:27-29 (New King James Version)

27 For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.

28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

29 And if you are Christ's, then you are Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise.

The germane point here is gender is irrelevant to who we are in Christ and has nothing to do with our identity from God's point of view.

I take this to mean God is a Spirit and we too, are spirits blessed with the power to create with our words.

The bible makes it clear that God is a Spirit. He is a Speaking Spirit who creates with the power of His words. He has no need for a penis.
