The non negotiable aspects of a healthy relationship

A healthy relationship is vitally important to almost everyone. It inspires, strengthens, and even provides synergy as the two of you face life's challenges together. Here are some important tips to remember when seeking out "The One."

1.) Know thyself. Take some time to learn what you like to do, what you want out of life. Explore your interests, take that cooking class you've been eyeing, go for that promotion. A well-rounded person makes for a more attractive partner, and developing confidence in your abilities will give you that edge to approach that person across the room. Also, clearly defining what you like to do will make it all the easier to weed out those whose lives don't mesh well with yours.

2.) Determine what you want out of a relationship. Although Hollywood would have us all believing that "Happily Ever After" is the ultimate goal of all relationships, in reality that may not be the case. Are you looking to get married, have kids, raise a family? Or do you simply want a companion on your life's travels? Answering these important questions will ultimately lead you to a more fulfilling relationship in the long run, and eliminate wasted time, effort, and heartbreak.

3.) Be brutally honest. Okay, you don't have to tell them how they really look in those jeans. But when it comes to important matters, be forthcoming with honest answers, and your relationship will be better for it. A simple "Yes, I did speak to that blonde." may hurt your partner's pride, but will definitely improve the level of trust in your relationship, rather than a stammering "I...no! What blonde?" If you are honest about the smaller issues, then trust will exist with the larger ones.

4.) Communicate your needs. Whenever something comes up where you need any type of support from your partner, ask for it unapologeticly. Do not be shy or feel you are putting your partner out by asking for what you need; if your partner makes you feel that way, you may need to reevaluate the situation. Partners should support each other through all of life's trials, and making your needs known will prevent resentment later on. If you don't tell your partner what you need, how on earth will they know?

Other aspects may come into play; these are more personalized and are ones the two of you will discover together. Just be true to yourself, honest and forthcoming. When you find a partner who can appreciate these traits about you, you just might get to ride off into the sunset together after all.
