Humans can develop thyroid problems for many reasons. To locate the thyroid, remember that it is located just under your adam's apple, in your neck.
Fun Fact: Your thyroid produces the hormone, THYROXIN. This hormone is converted outside of the thyroid gland where is becomes activated and stimulates the cells in your body.
The thyroid is essential in protein synthesis, natural body growth, your body's temperature, your immune system and your metabolism.
What does the thyroid do?
The thyroid produced several hormones such as THYROXINE and TRIIODOTHYRONINE. The thyroid helps our body's cells absorb the oxygen we need in every breath, and the thyroid can help control your metabolism, helps development, and temperature regulation, and protein synthesis. Ever wondered how some women can eat just about anything, yet not gain a single pound? This occurs when she has an over-active thyroid, as opposed to a woman with an under-active thyroid.
Why do people develop thyroid problems?
Thyroid problems can be hereditary, but most adults over the age of 60 years old have a higher risk of developing thyroid problems, simply due to old age. We all will develop thyroid problems at some point in our lives before we decease. Excessive radiation, such as radiation circulating through your body at work can cause thyroid problems. Another reason you may develop thyroid problems is that you developed a very strong illness as a child that weakened your metabolism and thyroid hormones to help absorb oxygen into your body. Imagine your body like a machine: when one part breaks down, it affects other parts of the machine if that one part is not attended to. The same goes for thyroid problems. It is important to ensure you keep yourself healthy and fit. Sometimes neglecting your body and getting surgery to repair it isn't always the wisest choice to make. You may also notice excessive acne in your adult years and serious fatigue. These symptoms are common causes of thyroid problems.
When you eat certain foods, you are actually increasing your chances of developing thyroid problems, so be sure to eat lots of greens, like the doctor always says - eat healthy and exercise! Such foods like turnips, saturated fats, white flour products, soy protein, whole / 2% milk products, powders (including spices like garlic powder and onion powder), and medication capsules can cause thyroid problems.
Fun Fact: There are two types of thyroid diseases: Hyperactive and Under-active.
What should you expect when living with thyroid problems?
1. Depression
2. Feeling cold all the time
3. Easily gain weight
4. Suffer from chronic fatigue
5. Pain, including muscle aches
6. Low Libido
7. Dry skin
8. Hair loss
9. Adult Acne
10. Feet and legs swollen
and these are only just a few symptoms of thyroid problems. See your health care professional if you have any questions or concerns.
FUN FACT: Eating seaweed helps to nourish your thyroid gland!
How can I be diagnosed with Thyroid problems?
If you have been diagnosed by your health care professional with thyroid problems during the earlier stages of the problems, you are on your way to helping yourself live a longer, stronger life. The reason why early-staged thyroid diagnosis is difficult is mainly because TSH tests do not always reveal what is necessary, and the same goes for a medical examination. A lot of crucial detail may be left out, so it is important on your part to do the research. Tell your doctor all the symptoms you have, including any hunger issues, and pain.
