Ok, you've bought your ticket and are now settling in for your flight to Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. You are sure to enjoy every moment you spend in the first capital of the Spanish colonies.
There is a lot of history in Santo Domingo. It is home of the Alcazar de Colon, (Columbus Palace). It is here where Diego Columbus, son of Christopher Columbus, lived when he was Spain's governor. This palace is also known as the first Cathedral in the Americas.
Take a three hour tour on cobble-stoned streets located in the Colonial City. View historical building dated back to the 1500's, as well as museums and forts. It is these very streets where Christopher himself, along with Fernando Cortez and Francis Drake walked. The city is one square mile in size and inside its walls are spectacular pieces of history for your viewing pleasure.
Santo Domingo is the home of Leones del Escogido and Tigres del Licey, the two baseball clubs of the Dominican Winter League. So, if you are a sports fan, this is right up your alley!
There is a lot more to Santo Domingo then just history. They offer other exciting and interesting things to see while in the Dominican Republic. Take a trip to the National Aquarium. Said to be one of the best aquariums in the Caribbean. Tamaury, a rescued manatee from Barahona lives here. For easy viewing of the sea life they have clear glass sea tunnels for you to walk through while watching these beautiful creatures.
Come and experience the Merenque Festival. It is made up of hot, spicy Latin music. This festival is usually held on the seaside, although it has known to expand into the bars, beaches and hotels. There is a lot of dancing, as music is the main component in the festival. This festival is held from July 23rd through August 1st.
Don't forget to get in some shopping while on your excursion. San Domingo is known for the largest free zone in the Caribbean. The free shops are located downtown, Cento de los Heroes and Las Americas on the south side of town. If you are looking for boutiques and hand made crafts from all over the country, you can travel into the newer cities.
These are just a few of the amazing attractions and historical events available in the Dominican Republic. Come and enjoy all the things this great country has to offer.
