Miniature Schnauzers are extremely popular dogs, and their presence graces many households in America. You are bound to see Miniature Schnauzers any place that you regularly see dogs - dog parks, pet stores, residential neighborhoods, and even the homes of friends and relatives.

Local newspapers are full of advertisements of Miniature Schnauzer puppies for sale, and the demand for Miniature Schnauzers is extremely high. The American Kennel Club registered 12,645 litters of Miniature Schnauzers in 2006. The number of registrations of Miniature Schnauzers with the American Kennel Club dropped slightly in 2007 to 11th place; however, overall numbers have been consistently in the top percentages. In spite of the slightly lower numbers for 2007, the Miniature Schnauzer remains one of the most popular dogs in the United States of America.

Why are so many people drawn to Miniature Schnauzers? What makes these dogs more popular than other breeds of dogs? The answers can be found by taking a look at the breed as a whole.

Appearance
The Miniature Schnauzer is a small dog, typically weighing between 10 and 17 pounds and standing between 12 and 14 inches tall. Their compact size makes them an ideal pet, and has contributed to their popularity in the United States. They are a robust dog and square in appearance. Bushy eyebrows, a long beard, and intelligent eyes peering at you make it hard to resist this friendly little dog.

Temperament
The American Kennel Club characterizes the Miniature Schnauzer as alert and spirited, yet obedient to command. Friendly, intelligent and willing to please are also characteristics of the Miniature Schnauzer. These qualities all make for a great companion and suitable for families with young children, empty nesters, or just about any type of household. Miniature Schnauzers do not do well in a kennel away from their "people," as they need to be part of the daily activity.

Activity
The Miniature Schnauzer is moderately energetic, although not hyper. They are very adaptable to your energy level and will be equally as comfortable in an apartment as on an estate. As with any breed, exercise is important for their health, and a brisk 20 minute walk twice a day coupled with free play time should satisfy their exercise requirements.

Health
The Miniature Schnauzer can live up to 17 years. It is generally a healthy breed and most have few health issues. Getting your Miniature Schnauzer from a responsible breeder will help ensure you are getting a healthy dog, as they are aware of the potential for hereditary problems and will try to eliminate known problems from their lines.

Miniature Schnauzers will remain one of the most popular breeds of dog in the USA. They have a wonderful temperament and size, and are very adaptable to most lifestyles. Once you have had a Miniature Schnauzer, there will never be another breed for you!
