Images of a black clad woman wearing a funny hat while straddling her besom come to mind with this topic. Unfortunately for fuel conservation and energy shortages these are only Halloween images meant to decorate, tantalize, and thrill children. Can witches fly?
The answer is a yes. Four ways come mind. First, and most practically, there are no rules barring a witch from buying a plane ticket. He or she deals with the same process as anyone else and pays for a seat. Religion and magick have nothing to do with this method but it is effective. It is available for anyone who can afford a ticket and behave while on an airplane.
Years ago people believed that flying ointments could assist a witch to fly. Most of the recipes for these included hallucinatory herbs and the nineteen sixties made this type of trip common knowledge. It isn't a very safe journey but people in older times didn't know that much about the negative affects of drug usage. Many ancient religions, or pagan cults, included the use of hallucinogens use as part of their rituals.
The third method of "flying" is called astral projection. It involves separating a conscious part of your spirit from your body. There are different religions that practice this. Buddhist monks and others from the Far East use a method that involves relaxing muscles from the feet to the head in order to exit the body. The person "travelling" simply looks like they're asleep. They may even be sleeping. Some report the things they have learned or observed while in a state of conscious dreaming.
Millions of people have had out of the body experiences with something called "Near Death Experience". There is no safe method to this "flight". No sane person wants to be close enough to death to leave their body and have to come back to it. I have no doubt that some witches have experienced this phenomenon. I also believe that it is not one that any survivors choose to repeat. Many people have described feeling love and light. Those accounts lead me to believe that others may experience sensations of a darker nature.
This seems to indicate that the safest, most cost effective, method of flight would be the study of astral projection. Supposedly you can bring back information, learn spirit lessons, and repeat your travels when necessary. This article is not meant to teach effective astral projection. It is meant to enlighten and to wish you happy dreaming.
