If you watch CNN, MSNBC, and the other cable news channels you would probably believe there are only two political parties in America. There are actually many political parties in America and it isn't even all that hard to start new ones.
I happen to belong to one of the two major parties. I am a registered Democrat. I am also a black man who is very weary of being a registered democrat. In the coming months I will be switching my allegiance over to the Libertarian Party. This will probably happen soon after we elect the first black man to be President of the United States of America.
In the last few months as I have watched Barack Obama ascend into the political heavans and actually come within striking distance of becoming President it has awakened within me the urge to know more about politics.
This quest to become politically aware and to end my own personal apathy as a Democrat who shows up to vote but never really examined the issues or the party philosophies I was part of has opened my eyes to how the media and the two major parties together have conspired to hijack the American population and how this power has run completely opposite of the vision of our Founding Fathers
The vision of our founding Fathers is summed up in the very beginning of the Declaration of Independence:
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.
Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.
These are the principles that guide the philosophy of the Libertarian party.
The Libertarian party has an opportunity to take advantage of the political atmosphere that currently consumes America. The American public is weary of being lied to and led around and having their constitutional rights undermined by a fear mongering Republican party and a spineless and enabling Democratic party.
