NFL talk: Brett Favre and retirement

by Kenneth Black

Created on: July 23, 2008

Brett Favre has been described as many things over the years. He holds records for yards, completions, touchdowns even interceptions. That has led to many accolades.
But until very recently, no one has said Favre has a split personality.

On one tearful day in March he retires. It was the right thing to do, he said, as he was not 100 percent committed to football. Then, trial balloons are floated that he may want to come back. But as with any leak, at first he denied it. Now, he's saying he wants back into competition.

Yes, indeed, it has been a strange few weeks.

The Retirement
When Favre retired earlier in the year, it was during a tear jerker press conference that had all of Wisconsin in tears, as well as the Hall of Fame quarterback himself. The time had come for him to step down.

There were those who said this day would come when it got closer to training camp, he would get that itch. For someone who has played football his entire life, transitioning can be hard. It has been his life. Everything that he has and is, he owes to the sport.

Favre is a different breed of player than most. Yes, there are some who seem to play only because of the money. That has never seemed like it was Favre's motivation.

During one game, he had four touchdowns and passed for 399 yards. Of course, we all know he is capable of doing great things - but this was just one day after his father died unexpectedly. He was in tears before the game, during the game and after the game. But somehow, he managed to command the field.

There are those who play football. And those who are football players. Favre was the latter.
And above all, he was a competitor.

The Final Bow
Because of that competitive nature, it would be hard to for him to walk away from the sport, knowing the final lasting image the world would have of him would be his last pass. He took a surprisingly strong Packer team to the NFC Championship game and into overtime.

It was a ridiculously cold game and one wonders why Lambeau Field does not have a dome over it for just such occasions (at least a retractable roof). But when the game went to overtime, Favre was in control. The Packers had the ball and the entire world may have assumed the game was all but over. Favre has been trying for the better part of a decade to get back to the Superbowl, and here was his chance.

He would not let that chance pass him by.

Only ... he did. The last pass he threw was an interception. It was not a freak interception that could have been explained away as
