no one but me noticed the phenomenal percentage of pitchers who did better under him than they did before and after? All this while he was also nurturing Hall of Fame careers out of Glavine, Greg Maddux, and John Smoltz.
I think it is important to have a consistent message throughout an organization, so I would ask my manager to help me choose the managers at each of the minor league levels, men he can communicate with regularly and who will teach our prospects the way we want them to play baseball. I would also have Mazzone join us in picking the minor league pitching coaches and Jaramillo the hitting instructors. I would hire either Brett Butler or Rod Carew as my first base coach because of the added bonus of them being able to teach all of the speedsters I will be employing how to steal and how to bunt. These are two of the greatest bunters in baseball history and I want everyone on my team to learn this lost art.
Finally, I would lower the cost for our faithful fans to come out and see us play and enjoy a few hot dogs and cokes. I want true Met fans filling my stadium every day, including the playoffs and World Series. I don't want them to have to take out a second mortgage to bring their little boy or little girl to Citi Field to introduce them to this great game and my team. Gaining more fans who will enjoy a lifelong love affair with my Mets is more important to me than charging five dollars for a hot dog that's worth one. I quote the great Whitey Herzog: It's the game that must survive.
