Dog breed facts: Black Mouth Cur

The Black Mouth Cur is a dog that is not currently recognized by the American Kennel Club. But it is a dog that flourishes in the heart of Americas Southland. It is favored for its extremely diverse hunting ability and its above average intelligence. It is used to hunt everything from bear to racoons. This breed of dog does not know the meaning of 'run'. It will give its heart and soul to the hunt. It will take down its prey with a diligence that is unsurpassed in American hunting dogs. These dogs will hunt and kill with their mouths or they will hunt by treeing their prey. Their bark is more of a bray like the infamous Bloodhound when they are on the trail and hunting.

The Black Mouth Cur is a strong powerful dog that is completely loyal to its family. They make an unsurpassed family companion. They have a special affinity and love for children. Many Black Mouth Curs will never leave the side of the families child and becomes their protector and friend to the end. In history many a Black Mouth Cur has given its life for its family without any hesitation. These dogs give their hearts completely to their chosen people. They can be highly protective of their family. And a person needs to never be afraid when they own a Black Mouth Cur in their household because this dog takes being a guard dog very seriously.

These dogs are best trained with a gentle hand and love. Their high intelligence tends to make training a breeze.

It is not adviced to keep Cur's and cats in the same household. Black Mouth Curs tend to kill other pets of the non canine species. It is in their hunting nature to do this and they cannot be faulted for it.

When fully grown most Cur's will reach the height of twenty five inches and weigh in at about ninety five pounds. It is not a dog suited for apartment life because it needs space to run and play. It requires a great deal of exercise on a daily basis to keep fit and happy. These are a type of dog that covers a lot of ground quite fast when hunting. Its amazing to watch them move tirelessly. They have a very distinct run style which covers a lot of ground quite fast.

Many people don't realize that the old Disney movie "Ole Yeller" was about a Black Mouth Cur. Numerous tears have been shed over this heartbreaking classic and many people have wrongly thought that Yeller was a yellow Lab but, in fact, Yeller was a Black Mouth Cur.

A better family companion and hunting dog you could not find then the Black Mouth Cur but they are not a dog for everyone so be sure and do your research. These highly intelligent dogs deserve the best home that an owner can offer them. They are an amazing breed of dog.
