Reflections: Christian choice

by Brenana

Created on: July 23, 2008

One of the unavoidable parts of this life is choices. Water or soda, tall or grande, blue or white. The Christian Choice is the choice whether or not to act like a Christian; a follower of Christ, a servant of God. Anyone can say that they are a Christian, but the choice we have is to show it through our actions. As easy as that is to type in an article or say out loud, it is much harder to do everyday of our lives.

This summer, my youth group went on a mission trip to Wyoming. This trip was one of the most amazing and powerful experiences of my life, and its theme was all about showing God's love. They called it loving out loud, showing his love through your actions and being his "hands and feet". Jesus tells us to love one another, even our enemies, and truly being a Christian is doing this.

Everyday on this trip, we helped God's people, but we don't need to go across the country or on a special trip to do this. Everyday of our lives we see people in need, whether it is a lonely old man or a fallen child with a bruise on her knee, and the choice we have is to either turn away or stop what you are doing to help them. Our world has become so busy and focused that it is much easier to take the first option, but that doesn't mean it is right or that we can use our crowded and busy lives as an excuse. Being a servant of God means doing what is right and not what is easiest or most convenient for us. That is the difference between saying you are a Christian and showing it.

Although we just came out of a trip devoted to loving out loud, my youth group still has problems with this, showing that it is not easy, even for his followers. Many times during our meetings or activities, I see and hear people putting others down or making fun of them behind their backs for making a simple mistake. I can just see God's reaction to this as he looks down at us from heaven, the people of his holy church ignoring his teachings and cutting his children down instead of building them up. So many people say that they are a follower of Christ, yet their actions don't show it, which is what really matters.

There is so much more to being a Christian then going to church and reading the bible. These things can help you build your faith, but we have to show our faith through our actions and love his people every day of our lives. We need to be everyday Christians, and make the Christian choices. That is the only way to truly be his servant, a Christian.
