Leann Rimes has been an remarkable part of the Country Music world since her debut as a 14 year old young blonde with a much older voice quality, comparable to Patsy Cline. Now, as a married woman, Rimes has continued to surprise us with her many vocal accomplishments in her songs. One of her newest songs, "Nothin' better to do", has certainly showcased her outstanding talent as both a singer and songwriter.
The song, which is found on her album "Family", is one she co-wrote with her husband Dean Sheremet and songwriter Darrel Brown*. It is about a young girl who can't help but get herself into trouble. It tells of this "crazy roughneck's daughter" getting herself into all types of trouble, and then explaining that her mother always said "Idle hand's are Devil's handiwork, oh the trouble you'll get into when you've got nothin' better to do."
The Video* for the song also showcased Rimes' acting and dancing abilities, and also showed the world that she is no longer a child. The sexy, and yet not overly provocative scenes in the video really played up the song.
In the video, Rimes' plays a woman who is in a Female Detention Center in the 1930's. Throughout the video, you see her talking with other inmates about what got her put in jail. Then, as the video escalates, she and the other girls figure out an idea to escape.
In a theatrical production comparable to Broadway musicals, she and the other girls fake a fight to attract the guards. Then, as they are trying to break up the fight, all of the inmates jump on the guards and proceed to tie them up. As they all run outside, they find their efforts futile as the gates close on them, with only Rimes' character getting through the first set of gates. As she is running for the second set of open gates however, she realizes that she too is caught as the second set of gates close in front of her.
The choreography is spectacular for the video, and really set the stage for the song to be a hit. Rimes revamped the choreography, and the music, for her performance on the 2008 CMT Awards, and really brought the element of the song into play.
As this brilliant young singer has turned into an adult, her songs have certainly reflected her growth. This song is a defining moment in her career, and I don't feel that it will be the last.
