Downloadable game review: Laser Dolphin by Dingo Games

When the Prime Minister gets abducted by aliens, who can you call? A dolphin with has a laser on his head. No, I am not quoting a line from one of the Austin Powers movies. The hero in this downloadable game is a pesky dolphin who uses his speed and grace underwater, along with the powerful laser attached to his head. Now in order to save the Prime Minister, the dolphin will need to find a spaceship to follow the aliens out into space. Remember, if you can suspend your disbelief about a dolphin wearing a laser gun strapped to his head, then anything is possible.

There are three different modes you can choose to play; adventure, racing, and stunt. Of the three, the stunt mode shows the most promise of the group. Here you will need to attempt various tricks and stunts in the hopes of earning enough points to collect a medal. The racing mode involves the player versus a timer; there is no head to head competition in the game. The adventure mode will carry the player through the storyline where it will be your job to go one on one against aliens who kidnapped the Prime Minister.

The first issue encounter with this game is how the dolphin is controlled. You will need to use the ASWD, Spacebar, and mouse all at the same time to achieve any kind of success with this game. This made it difficult to navigate through the environment and around enemies. This game would have been more enjoyable if the developers let the keyboard be the only controls.

The graphics in this game are les than adequate at best. There was little detail in the environment you were swimming in, and even less in the backdrop. There were times during game play when I was so turned around, I did not know which way was up. The focus of the game designers appeared to be on quantity rather than quality as the game field is full of enemies to blow up or swim away from.

The only saving grace to this game is the ability to customize your own level. That feature alone will keep most gamers busy for hours on end as they try to create the most harrowing adventures to navigate in. There was no indication whether the levels you create could be interchanged with those from any of the playing modes.

The overall rating of this game is one star out of five. Even if after this review you still want to even given the game a chance, make sure to try the free download before you spend any hard earned money on the game. This way you can see what it is like if you were a dolphin with a laser attached to your head.
