A Guide to Buying Baby, Infant, and Toddler Swings

One thing new parents find a necessity is a baby/infant swing. Swings can work wonders on a fussy baby, but all of the options can be overwhelming.

10 Things to look for when buying infant and baby swings:

*Weight Limits - Select the highest weight limit for longevity.

*Swing Motion - Some baby/infant swings only swing front to back while other baby/infant swings also have a side to side motion feature. It could be worth it to purchase one with both motions in case your infant prefers one to the other.

* Portability - If traveling is a frequent thing in your family, look for smaller portable swings

* Power Requirements - Most baby/infant swings require several D batteries to function. Newer models are being made with plug-in options.

* Harness System - New baby swings come with different types of harness systems. 5-point harness systems provide optimal safety for infants and especially for older babies learning to lean forward or sit up.

* Comfort features - Infant/baby swings come with a variety of inserts and padding. Some are deep and plush to cradle a newborn and others are firmer to accommodate an older baby.

* Head Support - For the newest babies, built in infant head supports are very beneficial.

* Ease of Transition - Many new infant/baby swing models have open tops to provide easy transition for babies going in and out of the swing. If the swing model comes with a tray on the seat, make sure it is easy to open and close one handed.

* Reclining Features - To get good use from an infant/baby swing long term, it should have a variety of reclining positions.

* Cost - Good swings do not necessarily cost more. Check a variety of brands and see what features you really need.

Once your infant/baby grows into a toddler, you will begin a search for an entirely new type of swing. You will want a swing to hang from a play set that's outdoors or on your kids' favorite shade tree. Children, especially toddlers, love to swing outdoors. While things like plush comfort are a thing of the past, safety features like harness systems are even more important. Check to make sure your toddler swing is made from durable outdoor material like plastic. Secure ropes, chains, and hook-up features are extremely important. With the proper swing, your toddler will have years of fun swinging safely in his own backyard.
