TRANQUILLITY FROM AN OLD OAK TREE
Old oak tree shade me from my miseries,
Save me from my enemies, let me rest
Beneath your still, tender green leaves,
While they cling to your aching outstretched arms.
Let us touch back to back; while I
Rest under you, you can relax over me,
And we'll both ponder deep in thought
About the deep, green, grassy sea.
We'll look skyward, to see a
Raven flying with his black shadow
Swiftly passing through our eyes.
And still higher, we'll see an eagle soaring,
And a sparrow directly below,
All flying with their backs to the sky.
On the ground we'11 see rabbits and squirrels
Run and play and hide, and a skunk passing by.
I do not know what they are saying,
You cannot tell me what they are saying, but
With their thoughts, they confide.
They keep running and playing and hiding.
Old oak tree, tell me what you can about you,
And I will tell you what I can about me
And perhaps, we to can take solace in what w have to confide.
