A truly "living" document
The experienced person who has been working for many years still needs to write or revise their resume sometimes. Some people may not have written a resume for a number of years and it might be an intimidating experience. Or, they might feel way out of practice. Still, there are ways for the older person to write a very effective resume. Older people may not have an extensive work experience ahead of them, but many find themselves in a situation where they need to find a new job and they aren't quite ready to retire. With a fluctuating economy, this may be all the more prevalent for some people. Here are a few thoughts on how someone can write a resume when they are older but not yet ready to retire.
Use all that experience to your advantage!
One of the most important things that an older person has going for them is experience. Oftentimes younger job seekers do not get jobs because they lack relevant experience. The older person can often chronicle their various work experiences in order to demonstrate their competency, skill, and wisdom. Granted, their experience may be outdated or not broad enough, but it can still be a distinct advantage. Some older workers worry that their experience may make it too obvious that they are older, but this may be something that they cannot hide.
You are older, but don't be afraid
The older worker may have difficulty hiding their age. All someone has to do is look at someone and know that they aren't as young as they used to be. While companies cannot legally ask about age, it isn't too hard to figure out that someone is older. The reality is that the person who wants to discriminate against older people will find a way. Companies don't have a difficult time hiding personal reasons for not hiring someone. All one has to do is say, "I don't think they are a right fit for the job". That said, the older person should be aware that their age might be a factor. They shouldn't deny their existence and try too hard to act young, but they should be aware that they may have to dissuade some fears.
Some rules are still the same
Being older and writing a resume doesn't have to be a daunting experience. Many of the rules still apply, and the older job seeker must scrutinize their resume for how it will be perceived by others. This might mean that the older writer puts down a few less dates and a few more job duties. Regardless, age is what it is, and the job seeker can't do anything about it.
