solar farms to power entire towns. Germany's solar power industry is now doing so well that their government is considering removing the subsidies that made this development possible - and they plan to meet their carbon-cutting goals years ahead of time, all the while churning out new jobs in the power-overhaul industry. Brazil is moving steadily toward a carbon-neutral economy, which will enrich its poorer population via lower power costs. Paris is buying 4000 electric cars to spot around the city as pick up/drop off rentals (doubtless they will triple that number before another year is out).
So "most people" know perfectly well what's happening, and are already doing what they can to slow or offset the worst effects of the Global Warming process. Luckily for the world, they haven't been waiting around for US leadership (there hasn't been any for three conservatively misled decades), and the further they pull ahead of America the harder it's going to be for us to catch up when we do finally stop lying to ourselves as an excuse for doing nothing. When wide range acceptance of reality arrives - and it's already happening in the general population of America, regardless of the desperate machinations of oil-based plutocrats in Washington to stave off the day - the country will wake up with a roar.
The technological brilliance, entrepreneurial verve, and ambitious vision that this country has shown in past emergencies is not dead and gone - it's only been lulled to sleep, temporarily, by government and corporate lies. Once America shakes off the deadly grip of the oil dynasties and the Wall Street Journal reactionaries, there'll be no stopping us.
Maybe it won't take that long to catch up after all.
