How to care for large aquariums

Many people enjoy having fish in their homes. In fact a lot of custom homes have been designed with wall sized fish tanks, moats, and ponds both indoor and out built in to accommodate many fish enthusiasts. To satisfy the demand of this new market, new varieties of medium to large sized goldfish, carp, and other fresh water fish varieties have been bred for these larger sized tanks and water features. One such goldfish variety that is becoming popular is the Black Moor or Dragon Eye goldfish. They are a variety of telescoping-eye goldfish with enormous offset eyes and very long lips. Black Moor goldfish are popular not only for their unusual silky black coloration, and unusual appearance, but also because they are a hardy fish that get along well in a community tank setting with other varieties of freshwater fish. In fact they have been dubbed, "The gentle giant." by many fish breeders and owners of this beautiful variety of goldfish.

Black Moor Goldfish are an alternative pond fish to the very popular Koi fish. Though not quite as large as the Japanese Koi type of large goldfish breeds, they are also not quite as fractious, or given to speeding around their tanks or ponds in a flash of fins and colors either. Black Moors are much slower moving, and in my opinion, are much more entertaining and relaxing to watch than Shibunkin goldfish, or Koi fish which are actually a type of carp although they look like large goldfish. The cost of these fish is very inexpensive and you may make the mistake of believing that the largest of the three sizes which are sold in pet stores are as large as your small or medium sized fish will get. I did say however that these are pond fish, at adulthood they should be between 5 inches to 10 inches and possibly larger for those in larger aquatic environments. If properly cared for Black Moor goldfish can live 10-15 years or more. They are better kept in indoor aquariums than outdoor ponds as their telescoping eyes reduce their visual acuity and their slower less hydro-dynamic body style can often keep them from getting enough food if they are kept in environments with faster moving or more aggressive fish.

Keeping Black Moors in an indoor aquarium is a labor intensive chore just like keeping any other fish variety in an indoor tank. In fact due to their size and the amount of food that they consume, one may find that they require more tank and filter care than other varieties of indoor fish. It has been my personal experience that this
