As an independent filmmaker I look at Youtube as one of the best and worst things that was brought to the internet in 2005. You can find almost anything. From tips on how to modify your Xbox 360, to clips of old silent films, and even step by step instructions on how to broadcast yourself on YouTube. There are a few things you should consider if you plan on getting famous on the ol' YouTube. It's easy to broadcast yourself and not hard to get people to look at it, but how can you do it better?
What is your aim?
Do you need a story? Not really. The only thing you need in order to broadcast yourself on YouTube is a camera and a USB cord. But what are you trying to accomplish? Do you want to share the video you put together of your camping trip with your friends? Or is it something more? Do you want to become famous overnight? The latter takes a bit more work then the former. With the age we live in, no one not even I can guarantee that you will become famous from a YouTube video. But there are some things you can do to improve your odds.
Differentiate yourself.
Do something different. If you're coming up with an idea and you think to yourself, man I have totally seen that done before, than you probably shouldn't do it. Be unique. People don't get success on the interwebs by copying other people's work. It doesn't matter what you are doing, a short film, a sketch comedy routine, a custom piece of music, difference is key.
Will people like it?
Probably not. But there is only one way to know for sure! Post it, get it on there and spread the word. Tell your friends. If you aren't getting a good response don't take it down. At least you did something. Take in the feedback and improve on it. Constructive criticism isn't there to bring you down or insult you, it's there to help you get better at what you love to do.
Quality
Although not hugely important, quality can play a big part in people appreciating your work. It doesn't have to be perfect, but no one wants to sit through a ten minute video that goes 5 frames a second. It's hard on the eyes and unnecessary. People have to be able to see you and understand you if you plan on getting out there.
Upload it now!
It's a simple task, broadcasting yourself. But to get famous is another. Most people stumble across fame on the internet instead of searching for it. Just do something you enjoy. Make it real and make it good. The talent is there just put it to good use. If they can do it you can too.
