Poetry: Defining God

by Jay O'Toole

His Name reveals Him as He IS,
"I AM", and that is all,
None else can live, unless He gives,
the breath of life to all.

If GOD had only Wrath as trait,
No human life would know,
For life would cease on first sin's date,
None would be left, I trow.

If GOD of Grace were all He'd be,
then still there'd be no Hope,
For Man would waste in luxury,
and hang himself by rope.

If GOD of Wrath displayed some Grace,
with Wrath known twice as much,
Caprice would fill all Time and Space,
without Man left to watch.

If GOD of Grace were Just sometimes,
that'd really harsh the dance,
For fear'd bedeck a life sublime,
and Hope would just be chance.

But if The GOD, Who Always Lives,
IS Justice and is Grace,
In His Control, Man's One Hope thrives,
Agreement gives us place.

Could life exist, apart from GOD?
Could Hope live, if not ONE?
Existence knows but One Lone LORD,
What grows, without The Son?
