Poetry: Sleep deprived parents

The Eve of President's Day

I was sleeping, so peaceful and serene
When the holiday brashly entered the scene
It's not that Washington was really here
But something was different, that's perfectly clear

Oh yea, there will be no school today
and my kids have sleepover friends to play
In the middle of night they've woken up
And decided to laugh and jump and stuff.

With Lincoln authority I head to their rooms,
the voice of reason, the voice of doom.
The uprising quiets, with innocent wonder;
At the sound of my voice, to the covers they're under.

"We were just cleaning the room" they claim.
At 2:20 a.m.? I'm sure they're insane.
Not crazy, just tired, and now filled with dread
at the thought of making Mom get out of her bed

Back down the halls past the computer I stumble
Bump into a cat and five shoes, with a bumble
I yawn, then remember the holiday
and thank God for our country and freedom to play.
