Giving to charity without actually spending money is not as great a challenge as one might think.
Wanting to give in order to make life a little easier for others is an innate characteristic for many of us. We feel fortunate and want to "give back" or "pay forward." Often the budget does not match our generosity of spirit, but that does not mean we must be deprived of opportunities to give.
There are many creative ways to give to charities without spending actual cash:
* Donate blood
Local blood banks hold drives in many locations. Employers and churches also offer opportunities for their employees and members to give blood in order to keep supplies in blood banks at a maximum. This is a good way to do something for our fellow human beings on a regular basis; quarterly, semi annually or annually is recommended.
* Donate vehicles
Instead of trading in your used vehicle when buying a new one, call charity that takes donated cars and have them pick it up and take it off your hands. The charity will benefit, and you can take a charitable donation tax deduction to offset the down payment you made in lieu of a trade in when purchasing your new car.
* Donate exercise and sports equipment
Instead of having a garage sale and sacrificing your expensive exercise and sports equipment for a few measly dollars, call a charity and ask if they would be interested. The charity benefits, the new owner of the recycled equipment benefits and you have performed an act of generosity without spending a dime.
* Senior centers
Look to the needs of your local senior center. You can donate unneeded medical equipment, cell phones, computers or any other item in good working condition that might become a welcomed possession for a senior on a limited income. Donating time to deliver meals on wheels, or acting as a chauffer for medical visits are other options connected with this facility.
* Volunteer your time
Churches are always looking for volunteers to serve meals to the grieving families after funerals, to teach their chidren's religion classes, to baby-sit small children during services, or perform church housekeeping and many other services.
* Homeless and Women's shelters
These shelters can use donations of bedding, clothing, resume writing service and drivers to help job applicants get to interviews. Often one is able to volunteer to serve at mealtimes in these facilities, especially during the holidays.
* Reading and story telling
Nursing homes, libraries, preschools
