How to increase movie theater sales through marketing

Attendance at movie theaters nation wide, have steadily decreased for many years, and in second quarter of 2004, movie attendance was down, between 12 to 15 percent, compared to previous year. Many reasons, attributed to the decline of movie attendance: movie ticket prices are increasing almost every year, generally people are more busy raising families, Home Theater use has been gaining popularity, decline in creative new movie ideas, less costly alternatives by renting a movie. Also, aging Baby Boomers don't frequent movies often, and cable / Satellite viewers watch a movie comfortably at home. Creative marketing ideas, is critically important to bring attendance back up again, this includes the dcor of the theatre, clean facilities, promotional gifts, services offered and price per ticket. Understandable, larger movie theatres will have higher operating costs.

Marketing suggestions to increase movie attendance. These ideas can be adjusted, based upon the budget necessities of the movie theater: Offering price discounts, when purchasing ten or more movie tickets at the adult price, customized Birthday gift certificates, special promotional price tickets for matinee movies or special promotional price for movies seen middle of the week, provide the opportunity to purchase movie tickets one week in advance, discounts offered for purchase two or more separate movie tickets for the same day, and children under certain age, either offered a special discount price or free movie pass, when accompanied by an adult that pays regular ticket price. Charging more for a movie ticket that combines popcorn and a regular size drink or some other combination. Any child under sixteen years old that provides proof of their birthday would be able to see a free movie on that day, accompanied by an adult that pays regular price. Also, frequent movie patrons, would receive a free movie ticket or a gift.

A movie theater owner for nominal charge, can set-up a website. The website would advertise future movie presentations, and list a variety of discounts available. Customers could purchase movie tickets online, by providing a credit card number (or possible using the services of Paypal.com) and printing their own ticket. This would save money for theatre owner by not having to provide a ticket, and receive in advance payment for future movie ticket.
