Best LAN, system link, or local multiplayer game. Yes I said Game, there aren't many games, in my opinion that can fit the list. I only know of one (1) that can fit the part. Sure people think Gears of War could be there, Madden, or even Call of Duty 4. But in all honesty, Halo3 is the best game for this type of game-play.
Anyone who has played this game in a competitive setting will know what I'm talking about when I say host has the biggest advantage ever when it comes to this game! Whoever controls host pretty much controls the game. Hence, why in my opinion this cannot make the cut for the best game or games on LAN!
Call of Duty 4, as many of us like to call it CoD. System link play is a big NO NO. The fact that you cannot customize your own class on system link just is a joke. It doesn't make any sense to me as to why you would make a game with no custom classes with how big the game is. If you have played with game online, you will understand 100%. Otherwise lemme run it down for you real fast. Online you can customize all your classes, so you can put a red dot on your M16 and pick if you want flashes or smokes. On LAN that stuff doesn't exist at all. So you have crappy classes like M16 with a grenade launcher (noob tube) on it. So this does not make the list.
Madden 08, ah one of the most popular games to date with a huge following and national tournaments. Yet, playing one on one on system link or even on the same box isn't any better than playing onlinr. You talk just as much smack and play the exact same as you would on a Local Area Network (LAN). I went to Madden Challenge in Denver, Colorado and I played just as well on LAN as I did online, but i had more fun online because the competition level is just as high. So, sorry John Madden, your game didn't make the list this time either.
The moment everyone has been waiting for, the best LAN game is.....Halo 3! Playing this game on LAn is 100x's better than playing it online, minimal to no host advantage, great atmosphere, and talking smack to other people in person after getting an amazing stick or head shot with the sniper is priceless! Everyone brings their A-Game when it comes to LAN, and the setting is just great. Getting 8 boxes hooked together, 8 tv's and gathering 8 people together for a team deathmatch or capture the flag game is amazing! Anyone to argue that this game isn't the best system link game out there right now, is well, crazy! This is the number one game on my list, and only game on my list!
The reason I constructed this list the way I did is because I have played in the competitive gaming community for almost 5 years now! I have played with MLG, CAL and at local LANS. So I know which games are good for the gaming scene on LAN. All those games above are fun online but the game changes SO much when it comes to the LAN scene. These are all my opinions based on the competitive gaming community that I have been apart of for many years now.
