Travel Diaries A Motor home Adventure in Britain
We have been motor home owners for 21 years. We used our vehicle for weekends away and our annual holidays. In October 2006 after a trial period we got rid of our home and set off in our Hymer motor home for an extended tour of Britain and eventually Europe. What we wanted to do was fill in the gaps and visit the places we had never visited before.
We started off by checking out the fairly local camp sites because we wanted to find the best site to use as a base to come to every now and again to pick up post and collect our pills and potions from our doctor. We are a pair of old crocks. We found a great little farm site which we use regularly.
We then headed south west to Somerset, Devon and Cornwall to spend the colder months of the year. We popped back up country for Christmas and The New Year and then rushed back down again. We found a lovely site in Plympton where we stayed most of February and March. There are some lovely walks along the river when the weather if dry. There is a park and ride which goes into Plymouth which is where Drake was playing bowls when the Spanish Armada was sighted. There is also a good supermarket just down the road. What more could anyone want?
What really surprised us was the amount of people in caravans and motor homes in this country during the winter. We had thought that most people would have headed to the sun in southern Europe at least during January and February.
The first winter in our van was a steep learning curve for us. We thought we had parred our possessions down to a minimum but we ended up getting rid of a lot more that we did not need. I did not really need all those shoes and handbags. My husband got rid of some tools and ended up with more portable ones. We found that a large bucket can have a lot of uses. If you include a sink plunger you have a great washing machine.
The second year in the van we managed to hook up to the internet with a mobile connection. It has been a boon. We can now find places of interest where ever we go. Mind you some of the best places have been found by accident. We have located lovely places just by wondering what was down a little road just running off a busier one.
This year we have been marshalling for a motor home club at all the motor caravan shows. This means travelling all over the country and we have planned our year around this. We really enjoy this as we meet a lot of old friends and make some new ones. We are hoping to go on up to the north of Scotland after the last show which is in Yorkshire. We have only been to the south west corner of Scotland before because that is where my husbands family live.
I would recommend this sort of live to anyone who is good at occupying themselves and has a good relationship with their partner. Being in such a small space means that you have to get over your problems pretty quickly. It helps having a dog. One of us takes him out for a walk while the other one sulks for a while. If you have ever thought about doing this. Go on give it a try.
