"Please remain motionless; a robot will be with you to assist you in a moment." The newly released Disney Pixar animated film Wall-E debuted at the box office in the No. 1 position spawning your child's desire for all things Wall-E and inspiring you to redecorate his/her bedroom.
When looking for design ideas for a bedroom based on a popular movie like Wall-E, we must examine the backgrounds that can easily be incorporated the bedroom decor. Wall-E is the story of the relationship between Wall-E which is an acronym for "Waste Allocation Load Lifter Earth-Class" and Eve "Extra Terrestrial Vegetation Evaluator" which begins when Eve returns to an Earth that has been destroyed. After several hundred years, Eve returns to see if the planet is habitable again for the humans still alive aboard a distant space cruiser, the Axiom. Backgrounds include the planet Earth which appears to be a huge trash pile with squares of compacted waste, space, and the interior of the Axiom or Wall-E's truck. When considering the dcor of the Wall-E themed bedroom, focus on the positive subtleties and consider incorporating learning opportunities that will support the child's continued interest.
Although Wall-E has lived on Earth cleaning up garbage, he still manages to find treasures like Christmas lights, a Gnome and a candy dispenser which he stores on his truck. Many children love Christmas lights all year long, but make sure to purchase lights that are for heavy duty use. Wall-E's truck is full of storage bins to store his treasures. Brightly colored stackable storage bins are available through many retailers and are excellent for storing your child's own treasures as well as shelf bins for organizing smaller items, such as school/art supplies. The background also features stacks of used tires. Pillows that are meant to look like tires are available at many retailers and can be piled up and placed in a reading corner.
Various retailers such as Anna's Linens, Toy's "R" Us and Target stock Wall-E linens and merchandise for help in creating our Wall-E themed room. The merchandise includes bedroom linens plush toys, an interactive Wall-E and his other robots friends. There is even a Wall-E that has a plug in for your MP-3 player.
Galaxy or outer space themed accessories have been around for a long time and these less expensive curtains, wall borders and paper and even bed linens can be incorporated into the Wall-E themed room with relative ease. Perhaps you would like to paint the walls one color with Wall-E tracks running around the room. If you cannot paint the walls, a nighttime space effect can be achieved with glow in the dark stars and galaxies or a purchased light that projects moving stars. You can also make your own lamp: Purchase a lamp or lamp kit with either a black or a blue shade or paint your existing shade. On a piece of paper, draw and then cut out star, rocket or planet shapes or purchase stickers. Don't make the patterns too big, so that you can put more pieces on the shade. Place the pieces on the lampshade using a glue stick until you are happy with placement. Using a razor blade knife carefully cut out the patterns.
If you would like to do something with the flooring in the room, many scenes in the Wall-E movie feature a solid black floor or metal flooring. Garage flooring is perfect for creating a solid black flooring color or imitation-metal diamond plate flooring effect and is available through various retailers. These tiles are perfect for those who do not own their home and yet want a flooring change because they can be laid on existing flooring. The polypropolene construction offers easy installation, just snap together using male and female tabs. These easy to clean tiles are stain resistant, offer a non-slip surface and come in many colors. One online retailer is GreatMats.com. The site address is: http://www.greatmats.com/products/diamond-plate-tile .php.
While the Wall-E movie is light-hearted, it deals with some very real global issues. If you are interested in teaching your child the importance of caring for your environment, the Wall-E movie may give you just that opportunity. The theme for your child's bedroom can help teach your child about environmental issues and what they can do for future generations. The Hearts and Minds website gives links for helping to teach your child about environmental issues, the address is: http://heartsandminds.org/links/greenkids.htm, also check out the kids page on the Environmental Protection Agency's website at: http://www.epa.gov/kids/
Don't forget to include in the design of the bedroom a plant for your child to take care of. Plants teach responsibility and while they can be killed, it's not quite as devastating as say not feeding the puppy.
For additional ideas, pictures of Wall-E's home, truck and friends are available at the Disney Pixar website for the Wall-E movie whose link is at: http://disney.go.com/disneypictures/wall-e/.
When you have finished with your Wall-E themed room and are ready to reveal it to your child, just quote Wall-E and say "Ta-da!"
