Open the Doors
If she sits by the window wishing
For a passing smile, a wave, a signal she is there,
If she longs for a visit , a letter, a note, a call,
Just to acknowledge she exists, then give it.
If he nods and smiles as he passes
With an old dog, stumbling and ancient as he,
Then show him that you see him, he
Is a person. You might like him, you know?
If they sit at separate tables,
With the newspaper to keep them company,
Then sit and pass the time of day, ask questions,
Listen and recognize the need. Feed it.
If you are ever lonely, then look around you
And see the others who could be there for you.
It only takes one word, one smile to make it happen.
That link, that touch, humanity. Kindness is freedom.
