The present state of the economy is reinforcing the need to save in the lives of all Americans. One of the most difficult times to save is when you are traveling. In a world of consumerism, a vacation often turns into a lengthy shopping spree. However, traveling does not have to cost you a couple of paychecks. Just take the time to plan your trip ahead of time and you will have a relaxing and thrifty vacation.
Set a Budget
Take the time to set a budget before you travel. If you set a budget you are more likely to be cautious with your spending while you are on vacation.
Research
Spend time researching the place that you are going to visit. Using your time to become familiar with the area beforehand will allow you to avoid some of the tourist traps.
Pack Adequately
Make sure that you bring all of your toiletries. The cost of forgotten toiletries can be particularly expensive. If you do forget something, ask for it at the front desk in your hotel. Often, hotels will supply you with a complimentary toiletry.
Transportation
Always make travel arrangements early. Spend time hunting for a deal as soon as you know that you plan to go on vacation. If you intend to fly, join the email lists of popular airlines and vacation companies. This will alert you to upcoming deals.
Accommodations
If you know that you will need to stay in a hotel, attempt to book your travel fair and your hotel at the same time. This can often save you 30%. Also, take advantage of referral programs between hotels and local businesses. This will often save you money. If you have relatives that live in a particular area, ask to stay with them.
Discounts
Use coupons while you travel. If you intend to visit a tourist attraction or an amusement park, look for coupons online. You can also receive discounts if you belong to certain organizations.
Local Advice
When you travel to a new area, ask a local individual about the best places to eat. If you are on a low budget, ask for budget friendly places to eat. Ask to see a menu before you sit down to make sure that prices are within your budget.
Free Entertainment
Never overlook the ability to find free activities. Check to see the area has a free museum, a free hiking trail, or a local concert.
Family Affair
Plan a vacation with family or friends so that you can receive a group discount. The cost of traveling is significantly cheaper if there are more people to share in the cost.
More Tips
If you frequently use a particular business (or credit card), join their rewards program. This will allow you to earn rewards for spending that you planned on doing anyway.
Visit the local tourist area. They will often have free maps, coupons, and advice.
Bring identification with you. If you are a college student bring your school id. Most places offer a college discount.
Travel on your birthday. Many restaurants have special perks for people celebrating their birthday.
Volunteer to travel for you company. The amount of work that you put in will likely be less than the vacation that you will receive.
Always take advantage of the opportunity to walk. It is good exercise and can save you a lot of money for gas or riding the taxi. If there are not any attractions near you take public transportation. It requires more planning but is definitely cheaper.
