Contrary to popular belief, pizza can be a very healthy food. Originating in Italy, pizza began as the poor people's solution to a staple meal. It was made with the freshest ingredients to satisfy the palettes of its' people.
In the many countries, pizza has become synonymous with junk food. It is undeniable that the typical fast food chain makes a very unhealthy version of pizza. It is typically made with large amounts of sauce, ridiculous amounts of cheese, and a ton of grease. But the fact that it is unhealthy because it is made in a fast food restaurant does not mean that pizza is generally unhealthy. Most food that is made in a restaurant is not healthy. When you decide to eat pizza it is best to make it yourself.
The Dough
In order to get a healthy pizza, most people will have to make it themselves. I would suggest making the entire pizza. You can begin by making dough that is made out of wheat flour and brushed with olive oil. You can also buy pizza dough that is made out of wheat flour from the store or ask your local pizzeria for their dough.
The Sauce
Take the time to make your own sauce. Typically, canned sauce will contain high amounts of sodium. You can crush fresh tomatoes and add your own herbs to create a sauce. You can diminish the amount of work that you will need to do by buying canned tomato paste. If you choose this option make sure that it is sodium free. Use only a minimal amount of sauce.
The Toppings
Always choose fresh toppings. Select fresh cheese that is low in fat. Grocery stores have low fat versions of popular cheese. You can intensify the taste of your pizza by using more than one type of cheese. Choose a wide array of vegetables to add to your pizza. You can also add a little meat. Your choice of toppings is crucial to the health or lack thereof of your pizza. Do not attempt to overload your pizza with too many toppings.
Portion Matters
Eat enough pizza to be full but do not overeat. Overindulging in most foods can turn a healthy meal into an unhealthy one.
