How to knit slipper socks

by Annalou Mack

Created on: July 21, 2008

This is a pattern that I devised myself by making some changes and additions to a basic slipper pattern. These are quite comfortable and warm for those cold winter evenings, so make some for yourself and other members of the family. They have a nice cuff that may be turned up to keep the ankle warm. The pattern calls for a turning ridge for the cuff and also for the foot. The foot is knitted in the garter stitch so it will be more comfortable to walk on than the rib stitches. These slippers will stretch so they will fit most women and some men.

Materials needed:
1 pair of American size 10 knitting needles
1 yarn needle
5 ounces of 4 ply worsted weight knitting yarn

Abbreviations used:
k = knit
p = purl
st = stitch
sts = stitches
rib = k1 p1
sl = slip
psso = pass slipped stitch over

Gauge:
3 sts = 1 inch

Notes:
(1) To give a smooth, neat edge, in each row knit into the back loop of the first stitch and slip the last stitch off the needle as if to purl, (after bringing the yarn to the front to be ready to knit the first stitch of the next row).

(2) Leave a 10 inch length of yarn at the beginning to be used to sew up the back seam.

(3) After binding off stitches there will be one stitch left on the needle. It is counted as the first stitch of the row.

(4) The slippers are knitted with two strands of yarn held together as if they were one strand.

Pattern for slippers: Make 2
Cast on 43 sts.

Row 1: K in back loop; k 3; p 1; k 33; p 1; k 3; bring yarn to front; sl 1.

Row 2: K in back loop; k 15; p 1; k 9; p 1; k 15; bring yarn to front; sl 1

Repeat first two rows 13 times (total of 28 rows)

Next row: Bind off 5 sts; k 32 more; p 1; k 3; sl 1

Next row: Bind off 5 sts; rib next 11 sts, beginning p 1; k 9; p 1; rib 11, beginning p1.

Next row: Rib 11 sts, beginning p 1; k 11; rib 11, beginning p 1

Next row: Rib 12; k 9; rib 12, beginning p 1

Repeat last 2 rows 6 times. Total of 14 rows from bound off stitches.

Decrease rows for toes:

Next row: Rib 9, beginning p 1; sl 1; k 1; psso; k 1; k 2 tog; k 5; sl 1; k 1; psso; k 1; k 2 tog; rib 9, beginning p 1.

Next row: Rib 9; p 3; k 5; p 3; rib 9

Next row: Rib 8; beginning p1; sl 1; k 1; psso; k 1; k 2 tog; k 3; sl 1; k 1; psso; k 1; k 2 tog; rib 8.

Cut yarn leaving an 18 inch length and thread it into a yarn needle. Slip the remaining stitches from the knitting needle onto the 18 inch length of yarn, draw up tightly and secure. Bring the edges together and finish the toe by sewing up the seam to the cuff. Finish the heel by sewing up the back seam.

I usually make both of the pair at once, casting on 43 stitches twice on the same needle. If you do, you will need 4 strands of yarn (2 for each slipper). You will have to watch that the yarn doesn't get tangled when you are working with so many strands. I have made 100s of these slippers in every size. You may contact me if you would like the changes for smaller sizes.
