Dating commentary: Serious relationships are boring!

by JustDanny

Created on: July 21, 2008

Let's get something straight, tiger: serious relationships are boring, ONLY, where love is missing.

Relationships are like bodies of water, without constant attention and activity, they're prone to stagnation. Without plenty of ongoing TLC, the most fairy tale of unions can (and will), wither away to be an argumentative soap opera.

Boredom tends to show its ugly head upon couples falling into a daily routine within a relationship:

Step 1: wake up
Step 2: go to work
Step 3: stop at shop son way home for bread and milk
Step 4: cook dinner, watch tv, and wander off to bed
Step 5: kiss partner goodnight
Step 6: Repeat steps 1 5

... Stagnation. Boredom.

What's required here, is an electric mixer to swiftly oxygenate the water. Here's five simple ideas to spice things up, keep each other interested, and keep the whip on your love's passion.

1. Random Thoughts & Gifts
A bunch of flowers for her at work. A text message you say you're thinking of him. People love being made to feel special, and are more inclined to return the favour having been flattered. Finding a saucy love note in your bedside drawer is sure to get the bonds of love reconnecting.

2. Mandatory Nights Out
Although sitting at home in front of a rented movie every Friday and Saturday night might be comfortable in winter, getting out amongst friends, or together for a romantic date, is essential to keep the hungry relationship monster fed. My partner and I aim for a night out at least every fortnight; and to always have an entry in the diary to look forward to.

3. Sex
Yep, that's right. A key ingredient in any healthy relationship is physical contact, attraction, and lovemaking. There are many ideas to keep the sex train on the rails, most of which fall outside the scope of this article, but try writing stories for each other, limiting any given position to one use a week only, or letting your partner buy any item off an online adult store. You can thank me later.

4. Enjoying the Ordinary
Try to make the ordinary moments at home special, too. Whether it be cooking dinner together at night, cuddling in front of your favourite show, or doing the housework together. We can't paint the town red every spare moment, so it's important to try and utilise the times at home doing mediocre things.

5. Remembering to Laugh
It's all too easy to forget how to have fun. Invent ongoing games to play, like truth or dare: "I dare you to wear my undies for a whole day at work". The limitations for games to keep each other amused are endless. Use your imagination, and together, I'm sure you can come up with something to keep you thinking about your partner all day long.

At the end of the day, fate will roll its own dice in the game of any relationship. Boredom however, is inevitable in any of life's many repeat processes, and as such, finding ways to counter this is important to keep the waters of a relationship moving. Mix it up, surprise each other; and most of all, have the time to stop, remove yourself from the day to day tangle, and enjoy what you've already achieved.
