The addage "the best things in life are free" even applies to getting help with your resume.
There are plenty of services that claim to be job placement experts who will wave the proverbial magic wand and make your resume turn into gold. I went to one of these services and for $7,500 dollars they would give me the works...but they couldn't guarantee me a job. When something like that happens you thank them for their time and run, not walk, out of their office.
The best place to start with your resume woes is make an appointment with your bathroom mirror. That's right. You are the best person with whom to consult when writing your resume. Why? you may ask. Because no one on the face of this planet knows you better than you. You are selling a product, which is you, and your resume is a product breakdown.
It is the same principle with shopping for a car or DVD player. You want to inform yourself about a product, see what you're considering to purchace, compare it with other brands and then make a decision after banging your head against the wall considering all the pros and cons. The prospective employer is shopping for an employee when they post an ad. If you're on the shelf or want to get on a different shelf send them a resume announcing: I'M HERE, I'M FOR SALE AND THIS IS WHAT I CAN DO!
So, keeping in mind that you are a product and you're the expert on this product, develop a list of things you have done and where you have done them. You don't have to put it in any sort of order at first. This is an organic process. You are putting all that you are, all that you have been and all that you want to be on a piece of paper. That isn't an easy task to accomplish. Take a deep cleansing breath in order to obtain clarity and patiently go through the process of putting your work life to paper.
Once you are satisfied that you have all that you need the real fun begins: organizing the blob of your work history and accomplishments onto two pages or less. Put more emphasis on the 'less' because most employers already have stacks of papers on their desks, they don't want any more that is absolutely necessary. I've got good news though, you've already got access to volumes of information to help you organize it. Take a field trip to your local library. That's right, a field trip, I told you it would be fun. Rummage through the reference section and you will find a plethora (that means alot) of information on how to create any kind of resume you could possibly image. And the
