Where is WWE wrestling heading?
Down the tubes is the flippant answer but I personally think it would only take a little effort to get the company back to the glory days.
First, let's take a look at the storylines. What storylines I hear you cry? And you'd be right. Today a story seems to consist of three weeks, sometimes four, worth of random brawling to set up the big pay off at the next pay-per-view. I think many of us remember the days of the feuds that went on for months, Undertaker and Kane for instance or Edge and Kurt Angle. The WWE writers seem to have forgotten that the guys in that ring have characters with back stories, stories that could be used to fuel new angles today. When they bring in new talent (not often enough) they do not have a real character and so, when they are thrown into the ring, they simply wrestle, without point or purpose and no-one cares about them. Consequently, they fade into obscurity very quickly and we are left with the same old faces week after week.
However, all is not lost. Leaving aside the pathetic La Familia' story with Vickie, Edge and Chavo, which is generally abhorred by the fans, the past couple of weeks have seen a spike in the quality of the storylines. We have the intriguing sight of Kane and his mysterious sack and the humiliation of Hacksaw by Dibiase and Rhodes Jr. These are begging to be taken up and run with. Their potential is obvious and we can only pray that these stories are not allowed to disappear into the ether like so many others have done over the past few years.
Then we should address the issue of time wasting. Far too much time is given over to bland and pointless ranting in the ring which means you are lucky if you get four matches in a two hour show. You can almost guarantee that someone will come out, waffle pointlessly for five minutes, with suitable pauses for boos from the audience, often repeating the same speech several times because of the audience interruptions and then squash some poor unfortunate who probably has hidden talents. Hidden because he's not allowed to show them because they are trying to push someone that no-one cares about (Umanga anyone?). On top of this there are the promo videos and rehashing of something that was often shown the night before and is frequently re-shown twice in one two hour show. It will then be re-shown on the next show and the support shows and probably rehashed the following week. The amount of time these things take up would actually
