TV show reviews: NCIS

NCIS is an American crime TV show about a team of special agents from the Naval Criminal Investigative Service of the United States navy and Marine Corps, whose headquarters are based in Washington D.C. NCIS has aired in the U.S. since 2003, and is now up to its sixth season. It is actually a so-called spin off of the TV show JAG. The ensemble cast consists of seven permanent characters, with the main guy being Mark Harmon (played by Leroy Jethro Gibbs), who also used to be an important character on JAG. Besides the main characters, NCIS has also had a number of guest stars over the years.

The comparisons between NCIS and CSI are easily made. Both shows deal with similar topics, and they use comparable fancy equipment to solve the crimes committed, and all this within 45 minutes. The main difference between both shows is probably the kind of crimes they have to deal with, as well as the main focus off the shows. NCIS is all about the navy and deals with a whole range of different crimes and situations, whereas in most CSI series the crimes are usually limited to murders committed in a number of different ways. The emphasize of NCIS is also more on the story itself, and not so much on all the impressive tricks used to uncover the truth.

In the five seasons of NCIS that have aired so far, the NCIS team has had to deal with a wide range of different crimes and situations. This has included a number of murders, as well as terrorist threats, bomb scares, mysterious deaths and some kidnappings. Some of the cases the NCIS team was involved with were very high profile, like when they had to deal with a bomb that was planted on a navy warship, or the death of a celebrity on a reality show, not to mention the episodes that involved storylines about the president of the United States.

The strong points of NCIS, and what makes this such a great show, are definitely the good storylines, the ensemble acting, as well as the role of humor on the show. I like seeing these guys do not always take themselves too seriously. I am a big fan of these types of TV series, and therefore, I really enjoy watching NCIS. However, with the amount of these types of crime-solving TV shows around these days, it is hard to be original, and I am afraid I have to admit that NCIS does not do such a great job at standing out. Still, I think it is a really good show that definitely deserves a place on any crime night on television.
