Poetry: Being a mother

by C. L. Craven

Created on: July 20, 2008

Being a mother is a humble profession
Seldom a trophy rewarded for "Best"
Through tears, disappointments and years of confession
The will of a mother is put to the test

She resents the burden at times, she admits
Tied to her apron strings, she must commit
To little ones needing, continually each day
She anticipates moments of quiet, not play

In the silence of the evening, when all are at rest

She remembers her calling and breathes in the mist
Of kisses from angels with mornings first light
And faces that shine from the moons' glow at night

Treasures surpassing all riches beyond
Earthly belongings, this spiritual bond
Exists through eternity between mother and child
Through terrible two's, an animal gone wild

An adventure each day, new valleys and peaks
Exhausted and weary, no strength left to speak
She stares out the window and dreams of a beach
A drink in her hand and sand under feet

Being a mother, shear ecstasy, then
Wailing and gnashing of teeth once again
All the rewards from this motherhood
Come from the knowing her children are good

Teaching to share and tying of shoes
To not hit or swear and telling of truth
To do what is right, even when it hurts so
To speak with respect, where ever they go

And then the days comes, she looks back to see
From birth to this moment, it flashes quickly
The children have grown and she must let go
Like birds from the nest, they flutter below

She hovers a little to make sure they fly
Their wings still too weak to soar in the sky
But soon they take flight and she knows she has done
The best she could do for her daughters and sons

Being a mother never really ends
Sometimes the birdies fly back to the nest again
Some lessons are taught and some must be learned
How could she teach her child not to get burned?

Be careful, it's hot! That's fire and it burns!
But the fires of life are not as easily discerned
While tending their wounds with loves healing balm
She knows, once again, they will fly on their own

Yes, being a mother, once she begins
Changes a woman, innately within
She learns that the world encompasses more
Not just herself, but an infinite store
