Getting around Cancun, Mexico

If you are hoping to catch a little south of the border ambience, Cancun offers the savvy traveler many ways to get around town. Whether you are an extreme traveler who does not fear the wrath of the cab driver or an avid bus rider, there is transportation for you!

Bus: Whether you are looking for local color or an air conditioned coach, Cancun has something just for you. The coach, identifiable by its red and silver paint, is the most comfortable way to travel. You will not have to sit next to a lady and her chicken on this bus system, but then, think of the fun you would miss.

The other option is the local bus. Looking for real interaction with locals? The local bus system is great for that. Those who must stand increase the likelihood of taking flight out an open window due to extreme speed. Drivers are not skittish about speeding, so this is one thrill ride you might want to pass on. One price will take you as far as you want to go and back again, but livestock may pay extra.

Rental cars: You are welcome to rent a car while staying in Cancun, but before you do, ask yourself two questions. Is it really the best way to travel? How good IS my car insurance? Native drivers always have the right of way and I would never personally drive where I could not speak the language well enough to talk my way out of a ticket.

Taxis: Take a taxi at your own pocketbook peril. While they will not tell you this, rates for taxis fluctuate and are arbitrarily assigned based on who you are and how Tourismo you look. Try to keep the white socks, sandals, and loud print shirts at home if you plan to take a taxi or you could end up paying two to three times as much as normal looking people. It is an unfortunate tale to tell, but it is better to be warned on the front side. Negotiating a price before he starts the meter is a good idea, but that doesn't mean the price is fixed. Since all drivers make up their own rates, if you don't like the first rate quote, simply move to another driver. After all, a little competition might just drive the price down to a reasonable level.

Scooter and Bicycles: Use these two modes of transport only if you are extremely experienced and do not fear the taxis, buses, and other drivers who are not concerned about one less tourismo. You may envision yourself riding along as the mariachi band plays in the background. However, there is a better chance that the novice rider could be listening to Muzak on the way to the ER. When in doubt, take the taxi.

When all is said and done, no matter how you choose to travel around Cancun, getting there is always half the fun, so relax and enjoy!
