Created on: July 20, 2008

So you think you're ready to take the plunge and own your own business. GOOD FOR YOU! For several years, there has been a drastic increase in the number of small businesses popping up around the US. Many people find appeal in being their own boss, making their own hours, and doing what they truly love. All of these are perks of owning your own business, but don't assume this task is one that will come easy.

Starting your own small business is anything but a small task. It requires a lot of preparation, hard work, focus and organization and most of all, passion! A successful small business owner is one that has planned properly. Below I have included some tips to help you get on the right track with planning your successful empire.

1. LOVE WHAT YOU DO - DO WHAT YOU LOVE

If you don't love what you plan to do for your small business, you will never love waking up to do it. So find something that you enjoy doing. Some enjoy making items and selling them as their business, while others enjoy managing. Some have skills they are great at and enjoy doing. So before starting a business, find what you like to do and focus your idea around that.

2. WRITE A BUSINESS PLAN

Yes! You do need a business plan. Whether your business idea is huge or very tiny, a business plan solidifies your ideas and concepts. It helps you take the first step into turning your dream into reality. A business plan also allows for you to think the whole idea completely through from location, financing, packaging, to hours, prices and customer base. A business plan will help you find the kinks and work them out beforehand. Such a plan also is sometimes needed to qualify for loans and grants to start your business. The more prepared you are, the more serious people will take you.

3. RESEARCH RESEARCH RESEARCH

Learning doesn't stop with school. When starting a new business it is vital for you to research. You need to know if you're idea or concept is sustainable. Will it sell? Do you have a customer base according to your demographics? You will also need to know what kind of laws you are accountable to. Do you need a business license? Do you have any special laws you fall into? What kind of taxes will you be responsible for? Finally, it is necessary to research financing options. What kind of grants are available to you? What kind of loans are you willing to take?

4. ASK FOR HELP

Don't expect starting your own business to be easy. Don't even expect it to be your business alone by the time you open the doors
