Kauai is the oldest of the eight main islands in the Hawaiian archipelago. This beautiful place was once home to one of the most mysterious tribes of people linked to Central Polynesia. It is thought that this tribe, the Menehune, inhabited only Kauai and none of the other Hawaiian Islands. In Kauai, you will have the opportunity to learn about the legend of the Menehune, as well as other is countless legends, chants, and mele (songs) that recount the enchanting history of Kauai.

A good place to start this historical learning experience is the Kauai Museum in Lihue. You will learn a lot about Kauai's culture and history at this Museum. There you will find displays of photos and artifacts that provide insight into Kauai's social and natural history. The museum's gift shop has many books that will educate you one the island's history, along with Jewelry, gifts and art.
Another great place to visit is The Koke'e State Park & Museum. It is located at a 4,000 foot elevation atop Waimea Canyon ridge. If you're into bird watching you will definitely want to check this out! The park is home to many rare birds. Most birds there are the only ones of their kind that live in the 'ohi'a and sandalwood trees that grow here. You'll find rare alpine plants in the swamp area, and you'll also see native land mammals, such as the hoary bat. If you're a hiker, you might want to visit this place also. The Koke'e Museum is the visitor center for the park. It has books and information about hikes, guides, and tours of the area.
How about some surfing? Visit The Hawaiian Surfing Adventures. This surfing site is located on the North Shore of Kauai and is owned by the Alapa Family and crew. This is a definite reminder of beach days! You will get to meet the Alapa family and their crew, hear stories of old Kauai, and learn history about the North Shore.
Another one for you hikers (also a good one for you swimmers)! Please stop by the Waterfall & Jungle Excursion. You will have the luxury of hiking through lush native flora and fauna and swimming in a Hawaiian waterfall! What an experience. It is a 4-mile hike that begins by hiking to the ranch lookout point where an exhilarating 360-degree view awaits you. This view includes gorgeous green mountains and crystal blue ocean.
With all of the beautiful sites and wonderful activities in Kauai, how could you not want to visit?
