Fake blood is always fun to make around Halloween, and it is VERY easy to make with common household items. Most kids' rite of passage into Halloween is squirting gallons of ketchup over everywhere and out the corners of their mouth.
Now there are tons of ways to make better fake blood.
Mix corn syrup with water - the thicker you want the blood the higher percent of Syrup you use. I would not go more than a five to one ratio unless you are doing a haunted house and you want it to run down the walls- a 2-1 mixture flows a lot quicker- then drop in some food coloring start with red then add some brown or even green to color.
You can also experiment with adding some things to this "base" cornstarch: peanut butter, and chocolate fudge, syrup, even apple or strawberry jelly can be added
I'm not going to give you a ratio here, that is part of the fun of making this with kids or friends- and REAL cheap as well- especially if you have a restaurant supply company in town and can get a large amount (of you can find some good stuff online as well)
WARNING- this is sticky stuff- and it WILL bring the bugs out- especially if you use the chocolate syrup mix so if you are going to be laying out in the yard waiting for your "guests". Use the following method.
Get clear or even strawberry hair gel or even liquid soap mix it with some corn syrup and a LOT of food color this is VERY hard to color for some reason- and those tiny bottles you normally buy at the store are next to useless on this- and watch your eyes on this one. But for good effect and avoidance of ants, this is the way to go.
Finally keep in mind that this will more than likely stain your clothes, and even soaking your jeans won't get them 100% clean- expect to lose what you wear.
Also if you are going to make a bunch of this stuff before hand- make sure you have room in the refrigerator, in addition to bringing in bugs- the syrup and jelly mixtures especially.
Above all play with the mixture- the fun thing about making fake blood for a haunted house is you can always toss the bad results on the driveway ( DO NOT throw on cars!) or on the grass next to some old clothes and you can still get a pretty good result. If you are looking for a good splatter effect, the thicker the mix the farther up you need to be- my own haunted house I normally spill a good bit from the back end of a pickup truck on the way in, giving me a more realistic look - as if someone was running to the house.
