Keeping carpet family friendly is not always easy. Especially in high traffic areas. Carpet in a home can also hide all sorts of bacteria, molds, smells, dust, DNA, and even mites. Uck. How does someone keep all of those irritants away from their loved ones without eliminating carpet all together? Keep it clean.
Vacuuming is often just not enough. Not to mention most vacuums lose suction over time and can be rendered ineffective in removing irritants from the fibers and deep below the surface. Replacing your vacuum yearly seems to be an effective way of combating the lose of suction. Cleaning and disinfecting a bag less vac is necessary and will aid in your vacuums continued usefulness. Purchasing a vacuum with a hepa filter is also a great way to lessen the risk of irritants going air born. I also strongly recommend some form of carpet deep cleaning, weather professional or at home.
Whether it be a foam, spray, or granular, vacuum up method, or a steam cleaning, keeping carpet clean is no easy task. All you need to do is stroll through your local grocers cleaning supply isle and see the numerous carpet cleaners available for in home use. Many contain chemicals, be careful to read the package to avoid allergic reactions. Pet and child friendly cleaners are a must. Some even suggest more mild things like baking soda.
Vacuum up cleaners can be effective in removing some odors but seem to lack the ability to clean deep below the surface. I have found steam cleaning to be the most effective in removing odors, bacteria and other irritants from deep below the carpet surface. You can purchase your own in home steam cleaner, or rent one from your local hardware or rental store. I recommend buying your own. I have found it to be cost effective and I know it is "my" dirt that has been through the machine. Peace of mind is always nice.
Be vigilant on your carpet cleaning. Do not let spills sit or soak in, and be certain to keep your cleaning devices clean as well. Happy carpets make a happy home!
