If you are afraid of spices, not to worry! Spice-phobia, is highly treatable with the correct therapy. No need to see a psychologist! Just a laid back tour into the marvelous world of flavors and aromas.

Many people have come to fear spices because they have encountered extreme flavors and unpleasurable side effects. The most feared spices appear to be the hot ones, those deviled powders that have caused eyes to tear and faces to turn deep ketchup red. Relief in these cases is sought at once by hydrotherapy, meaning gulping down lots of water.

If your really think of it, some of these potent spices are used as a method of defense. Pepper spray is obtained by the extracted oil of the hot pepper "Oleum Capsicum". Generally abbreviated as OC, expect it to be really hard on you if by any chance you get it on your eyes and inhale it. Simply ask any law enforcement officers that have tried it during training, many surely will tell you they fear spices too!

The secret in overcoming spice-phobia is getting to know the spices better. Start out by buying a variety of spices at your local store. You will be amazed of the variety of spices that are out there. Pick a few that stimulate your curiosity or simply because they have an intersting name. Think of what an intersting culinary experience you are about to endure! Think of how far people travel to visit new countries and try their local foods. Yet, there you are with your spices, ready to travel staying in your own kitchen!

The key to accepting new spices is moderation. Sniff the spice and lick a tiny amount off your finger. You can then search over the internet and learn mmore about the spice and try some recipes. Be sure to use the spices in a quantity inferior to what a recipe demands. This after all, can turn out to be a great cultural experience!

If you are not ready to adventure this far, start with mild spices. Here are some good starter spices that will not burn your mouth much:
Mild Curry
Paprika
Pepper
Onion powder
Garlic powder
Sapphron

If you are afraid of hot spices you definetely need to stay away form the Habanero chili. This spice has actually won for a year the Guiness World of Records prize for being so hot!
The level of heat of a spice is measured through the Scoville scale. A Scoville Scale will range from 0 (like a sweet pepper) to 15,000.000 (pure capsaicin)
The Habanero chili ranging around 200,000 however has been beaten later on by the Naga Jolokia reaching a minimum level of 855,000!

Spices can ultimately, turn out to be your best friend, simply get acquainted with them, use them in moderation and enjoy!
