a carpool might not be the most convenient commute, it can save tons of gas. Consider forming or finding a carpool through a bulletin board at work, Craigslist, or a website like eRideShare.org. While you may get stuck listening to Barry Manilow at 7:30 AM, you'll at least have the consolation that you are cruising along at 60 mph in the HOV lane.
Advanced Tips
Not everyone can make these decisions in their offices, but for those who do, or who can influence those who do, these tips will save money, make happier, healthier employees, and reduce the strain on the environment.
1. Spend Green on Green
When its time to purchase new appliances or electronics for the office, consider EnergyStar certified products, manufacturers with strong environmental records, and items made with eco-friendly or recycled materials.
Order recycled office supplies whenever possible and look for post-consumer content, the biggest landfill contributor. Paper, post-its, envelopes, and even pens come in recycled and recyclable varieties. Provide appropriate bins for recycling and make sure employees are aware of where they can recycle used office supplies
2. Try Feng Shui for the Office Manager
Simply re-arranging cubicles and desks to improve the amount of natural or overhead light shining on each worker can save energy. Use window coverings that still allow light into the office to reduce the number of lamps used during the day.
3. Plan for a Greener Future
When it is time for office renovations, keep the environment in mind. Low VOC paints and formaldehyde-free cubicle dividers and furniture are better for your health and for your environmental conscience.
New buildings or major renovations can include green features like solar panels or a green roof. These projects will eventually pay for themselves in energy savings and will also boost the image of the company in the eyes of outsiders, a win-win prospect.
4. Encourage Others
Even if you aren't making the decisions, you can chat up the people who are, and they are often motivated by the bottom line. If your office has decreased its energy consumption by 10%, office supply requirements by 15%, and saved 11% of overhead costs in the process, you can bet the guys at the regional office will be interested.
Point out employees who are reducing resource consumption, and make them an example in the office. Those who are putting in the effort to help the environment should be recognized for many reasons, and their dedication is helping your organization's environmental footprint and image.
Reducing resource consumption in the workplace is good for the environment, the financial future of the company, and also good for the soul of the individuals who are making changes to help the environment. Consider making small changes and inspiring others to do the same.
