Though many doctors feel that more scientific study is needed to prove that the therapy works, some are embracing the concept, as long as it doesn't replace proven, medical treatments (Powell). People are quick to associate with aromatherapy, otherwise, since it is easily accessible and reaps benefits both physically and emotionally.
Though aromatherapy has great benefits, it can reap negative ones if not used properly. Essential oils should never be taken internally, and should not be used undiluted on the skin. Excessive use of the oils can cause skin irritations, allergic reactions, headaches, fatigue, or insomnia. Some of the essential oils can also increase the skin's sensitivity to sunlight. People with asthma or epilepsy should avoid aromatherapy altogether since inhaling such scents could cause bronchial spasms or seizures (Brody). Oils should also be pure, botanical-based and not merely fragrant oils. Mere precautions such as these should be taken before becoming engulfed in the field of aromatherapy. Like any therapy, it should be well researched and double-checked before delving into what could be unsure territory.
Aromatherapy can be used for a variety of reasons, whether physical, emotional or medicinal purposes. Though it is not entirely scientifically proven, the benefits are concrete, though the oils should be researched prior to use. In such a chaotic and hectic world, it is nice to have ways to relax and to release stress. As well as massages, aromatherapy reaps wonderful outcomes for those who chose to use it, because with its proximity to the brain, it has immediate results. Whether for helping with stress, a bad day, anxiety, fear, motion sickness, or healing wounds, aromatherapy claims to cure all of these and more. With pleasant smells and a relaxing atmosphere, what better way is there to treat the stresses of everyday life?
