Easy carpet cleaning tips

Carpet care can be a snap with an efficient carpet cleaning machine and carpet cleaning supplies. Choose carpet cleaning equipment and products certified by the Carpet and Rug Institute (CRI). CRI has partnered with Green Seal and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Design for the Environment program to award the CRI Seal of Approval to carpet cleaners that are environmentally friendly.

For all your carpet cleaning care needs, try these easy carpet cleaning tips:

*Choose a carpet cleaning machine appropriate for the task. Vacuum regularly with a Carpet and Rug Institute (CRI) certified beater bar or suction style vacuum cleaner. Frequent and thorough vacuuming removes grit, dust, and food particles that get down into the fibers causing abrasive wear. Use a carpet sweeper to pick up smaller spills in between vacuuming.

*Cleaning carpet stain immediately is the most effective means of protecting your carpet from permanent stain damage. Use a wet/dry vacuum to remove solids and moisture. Or clean manually by removing solid material first. Blot with dry white towels to remove as much moisture as possible. Apply stain removal carpet cleaner certified by the Carpet and Rug Institute, following manufacturer instructions. Test first on an inconspicuous location to determine the color fastness of your carpet. Rinse with water, then blot to remove excess moisture. Do not rub carpet. Place a dry white towel over the spot, weigh it down with a brick, and allow to dry overnight. Remove towel and brick, then fluff gently to raise pile.

*To remove odors from your carpet, consider using a carpet deodorizer. Follow manufacturer instructions.

*To remove candle wax, place brown paper over the wax. Iron on warm setting. The paper will absorb the wax.

*Keep do-it-yourself carpet cleaning supplies handy. Use white vinegar mixed with equal portions of water in a spray bottle, one tablespoon clear ammonia to one half cup water, or one fourth teaspoon non-bleach and non-lanoline dishwashing liquid mixed with one cup of water in a spray bottle.

*Before deep cleaning, consult the manufacturer's warranty for cleaning recommendations. Specific professional cleaning regimes are required every twelve to twenty-four months to maintain most warranty provisions.

*Steam clean your carpet using a hot water extraction method followed by a clear water rinse.

*Avoid walking on wet carpet or replacing furniture for at least eight hours or until carpet is completely dry. Provide good ventilation to prohibit the growth of mold.
