Where is my life going? Today I feel lost
So many places to go
So many things to do
So many people to see
Yet, for all that, I feel overwhelmed
Unable to see wood from trees
Lacking in self-confidence to follow the unknown road
Without either a route-map to guide me
Or a more experienced traveller to forewarn me of possible dangers on the road ahead.
Where is my life going? Today I feel at a crossroads
Unable or unwilling to turn back
I lack either the energy or the enthusiasm
To turn left or right; and yet
Being discontent with my current direction
I am equally loath to continue forwards
And wish, for once, I could stand still
Without the constant pressure to keep going when all one wants to do is stop
Or change when all one wants to do is stay the same.
Where is my life going? Today I find myself looking at names of familiar places on life's journey
Reflecting on how they have changed in the short time I have known them
Fearful of current trends which threaten to destroy them
And, in the process, deprive me of my roots and belonging
Making me feel more like an orphan or a bastard
Rather than the legitimate child of the universe.
Where is my life going? Today I feel continually on edge
Unable to relax, I find myself continually worrying
About things I should have done but haven't had a chance to do at work
And other things I have done but ought not to have done to try and stay afloat.
Round and round my worries go inside my head
Like a broken record they keep repeating themselves and become louder and louder
Giving me no respite from fear of losing my job and my home
And pulling me ever further down in the spiral of hopelessness and despair.
Where is my life going? Today I feel I'm everywhere but belong to no-one
With minimal sense of purpose and self-worth
Having lost all sense of achievement and fulfilment since changing jobs
And mislaid the love I once had when still with Mr Right
Desperately trying to locate the route-map
Or remember the verbal directions of others
To a more certain and restful destination.
