I still can't believe that some adults still have not been to New York city at least once in their life! I just came back from my 15th trip to New York and I can't wait to get back. Traveling to New York is an addiction for me. I love preparing for it also. I will talk in this article about the means of transportation on getting to this beautiful city. I will then talk about what you need to know when you want to book your hotel. I will also talk about certain activities you have to do, and those you should definitely skip and I will finish with the food part because you have to eat if you want to keep up your energies and walk your way through the city!
TRANSPORTATION: You can come by plane, train, bus or car. The more expensive way is definitely the plane, not only because of the plane ticket but also because the 3 major airports (Newark, JFK and LaGuardia) are outside of Manhattan and 2 of those (Newark and JFK) are not accessible by public transportation so you need to take a cab or a car service and that means at least 40$ to 50$ more each way. You can take the bus and the subway from LaGuardia which will cost 2$ but it is longer than taking a cab.
You can take the Amtrak trains and get into Penn Station. Amtrak trains are not expensive, they are less expensive than the bus, but they are notorious for arriving late. I once took the train from Montreal (122$ both ways is a steal!) and arrived over 2 hours late on top of the 12 hours train ride is a bit too much time in the same space.
There are the Greyhound buses...yikes...I am now too old for those. They put too much seats in the bus. You have absolutely no space whatsoever. I once took the night bus and woke up with the girl beside me and her leg on top of mine...did I already say yikes? You then get in at Port authority which is another experience all by itself.
You can go by car and it is a nice option. There is a website called www.iconparking.com where you can reserve a parking near your hotel and they usually are under 40$ per night. We did it once, we were 3 in the car, and it was a more economical choice than paying for 3 planes fares.
HOTELS: This is probably the longer and harder part of the trip..finding the right hotel for the better price. This is also a challenge for me. I love finding the best hotel room, in a 4 star hotel, for the lowest price. I will give you a couple of websites you have to consult first and then the one where you have to go to see if the hotel website is telling the truth
