If the thought of keeping a journal seems like one more thing to add to an already full day, perhaps you should reconsider. With all demands placed on us work, family, friends, etc. it's extraordinarily difficult to find time for ourselves. However, if you can find ten minutes each day to record your thoughts, feelings, dreams, and daily events, you will find that your productivity and happiness will soar.
There's a famous quotation that says that those who don't understand history are bound to repeat it. Do you keep repeating the same mistakes over and over again? If so, journaling can be the answer to your prayers, allowing you to break free from these negative cycles. Conversely, if you achieve something positive, your journal can help you replicate your success.
This will only work if you faithfully keep your journal. Therefore, it is essential that you carefully choose your journal's format. Whatever encourages you to write is the best option. You can choose to write with a pen and paper. I find that a spiral bound, purse-sized notebook works best I can carry it with me all the time, writing when the fancy strikes me. Perhaps keeping your journal on your computer would better suit your needs.
The topics you address in your journal should also be quite personal. Perhaps you need to vent your emotions. This is a great way to use a journal you can freely express yourself without worrying about someone else's reactions! Or perhaps you're faced with a monumental decision. Use your journal as a space to brainstorm ideas, make pro / con lists that you can refer to later. Even if your life is running-along smoothly, your journal can be useful to keep your priorities in check. For these times in my life, I like to include a ranking system. How successful was I in advancing my career? Nurturing relationships with family and friends? Eating healthily and exercising? Helping others?
However you choose to write your journal, keep it for your eyes only. Think of your journal writing as special time to focus on yourself. With all the responsibilities in your life, you need it. And, you deserve it!
